Lately there's been a lot of controversy about the future of Star Wars' Expanded Universe, and what this portends for J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan's Episode VII. It's pretty clear that the events of the upcoming trilogy (plus the one-shot spin-offs about Boba Fett and other characters) will likely upend a lot of the established EU canon, to the extent that they don't wipe it out. (All of it.) These rumors — and nothing is set yet — have divided fans and critics; some welcome the prospect of resetting the EU completely in favor of a new, leaner, better, stronger, more integrated universe, while others are still attached to the likes of Thrawn, Mara Jade, Jacen, Jaina, and those lovable, cuddly ysalamiri.
So here's my hypothetical for you, the honest to Gonk, Force-Being-With Star Wars fan: If, tomorrow, you were given the opportunity to make your own, real, 100% canonical, saga-tomically correct Star Wars movie (after having demonstrated your cinematic prowess with brilliant and idiosyncratic films of your own, natch — this is a fantasy here, after all), what would it be about? Would you stick to the established "G" canon, or adopt — or even adapt — other letters of the LFLabet? Who would be the central characters? What planets — old or new — would be the principal settings? Who would the bad guys be — Empire remnants, a resurgent Sith, or someone entirely different? How much of the established iconography (including the prequels) would you use? What would be the most controversial decision you made? Who would love you? Who would burn you in effigy and say snide things about you on the Internet?
Excelsior, and live long and prosper.
