This is the age of the reboot. It's been happening regularly for the last 15 years at least, spurred on, I think, by a few successes like BSG and the Brady Bunch movies. Despite the failure of almost all others, such as Knight Rider, The Bionic Woman, the UK The Avengers movie, the Dukes of Hazzard movie, and Total Recall, they are still coming thick and fast. We just had Robocop, and are soon to get a Man From UNCLE, and I just heard a new Odd Couple series with Matthew Perry. It will never end.

And despite myself, every so often I think of some older show that I used to love, and try to reimagine it as a new take on the series, or just do a straight up remake. And when I do so I go searching for casting.

Imagining Remakes Of Old TV SeriesS

For example, I would remake the aforementioned UK The Avengers series, where it would be set in modern day, but the 2014 that was imagined back in the 60s so it remained stylised and colourful (Austin Powers-style) and recast Steed with Ben Daniels, and recast Emma Peel with Michelle Ryan.

Then I'd think about a sequel to MacGyver, with Katee Sackhoff this time, as Agnes MacGyver, his niece.

And then today I thought of remaking this 80s show, a homage (or ripoff) of Indiana Jones called Tales of the Gold Monkey, which was set in the 1930s about an adventuring pilot on a South Seas island.

Imagining Remakes Of Old TV SeriesS

Top row, original cast: Stephen Collins as Jake Cutter, Caitlin O'Heaney as Sarah Stickney White, Jeff MacKay as Corky, and Roddy McDowall as Bon-Chance Louie.

Bottom row, my reimagined cast: Josh Holloway, Emily Deschanel, Joe Lo Truglio, and Bruce Campbell.

It's a lot of fun to do this, and a great way to waste a couple of hours.
