The Giving Tree

Today I re-read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. I got as far as "Once there was a tree...." before I got choked up. That's . . . abnormal for me, but this book gets me right in all the soft tender emotion-places.

But then I found out that a lot of people really hate it. This . . . surprised me at first. Now I see that it's a pretty widespread sentiment, and that adults and children alike are divided over whether it's amazing or terrible.

I'm curious as to what some of you think, genuinely just interested. If it's not something you've given much thought to, don't worry about it. My own (initial) take will be in a comment below.
