Godzilla will fuck your shit up! (Mild Spoilers)

I saw Godzilla earlier today and it was everything I could have hoped for. Godzilla was perfect, the action was perfect, and the atomic breath was spectacular. Mild spoilers, I'm not going to talk plot as much as gush about the beauty of Edwards magnificent beasts.

I've watched mostly all of the Godzilla movies (even the '98 one which I don't outrightly hate) but this is probably the Godzilla I have been waiting for all my life. The hype is real. When I first saw the silhouette of him in the trailers I was a bit put off by his bulkiness. He looked like an overgrown pitbull. The trailers showed more of how he moved, but they can't prepare you for the awesome money shot the film has when the Big G is revealed in all his glory. And that roar, that mother fucking roar is perfect:

The theater was mostly empty so I was the only one squealing FUCK YEA, when the camera gave us a full shot. He is so fucking big guys, and he just fucks shit the hell up. Which I loved most of all. He is more chaotic neutral than an outright good monster, because he does kill thousands of people everytime he appears and takes a step. And pretty much levels everything in his path. There are a few close ups in the movie of his face and hide and for the most part it all works. I wish at times the film was a little lighter so we could see more of the action and the details of Godzilla. But they captured the right amount of ferociousness in his expressions that made those shots really compelling.

Also, Godzilla's movements are much more natural. He moves like a ferocious predator which I always thought was what his movements should be. The way he fights too, is much more in line with an animal, but with a touch of intelligence you would expect from the big guy. Now lets talk about atomic breath. It was fucking AWESOME. It was used well enough that it looked amazing and seemed like a natural extension of Godzilla's abilities. Not just something tacked on for the sake of pleasing fans.

I think I loved the ending most of all because it embodied what Godzilla as a character is all about. I think that Edwards approaching Godzilla as a force of nature rather than just a regular beast was the best idea he had. I also have to give a shout out to the MUTOs who looked just as good next to Godzilla. I loved the retro futuristic elements they incorporated into their design, which contrasted really well with Godzilla's brute force design.

Now I have read a lot of critics say that the human story was boring. To which I say DUH. Anything next to this version of Godzilla is going to look super fucking boring. And most of these characters were just doing their regular jobs that seem boring because Godzilla was the clear hero. Yes we follow Ford, Aaron Taylor Johnson, (and his family) but he really isn't a hero just another soldier. What I did like is that they all mostly made the right calls, no one was outrightly doing dumb shit most of the time.

Overall this was a fantastic way to start of the deluge of summer movies coming.

Some notes:

  • Loved the allusions to the Big G's past: A poster with fighting Kaiju and a tank with a chrysalis that was labeled mothra.
  • I'm going to need all the gifs possible when this hits home video because it is so giffable like its predecessors.
  • I kept laughing and pulled out of the story every time the two leads were acting like husband and wife since Aaron Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen are going to play twins in the Avengers Age of Ultron. I had to remind myself, "Its not gross, because this is a different movie bro."
  • They called him the king of monsters YAY!
